True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary part 1

History on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin

Here is a list of Popes who have praised “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin” by St. Louis de Montfort:

Blessed Pope Pius IX(1846–78): Declared that Saint Louis De Montfort’s devotion to Mary was the best and most acceptable form of devotion to Our Lady.

Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903): Granted a Plenary Indulgence to those who make Saint Louis De Montfort’s act of consecration to the Blessed Virgin. On his deathbed he renewed the act himself and invoked the heavenly aid of Saint Louis De Montfort, whom he had beatified in 1888.

Pope Saint Pius X(1903–14): “I heartily recommend True Devotion to The Blessed Virgin, so admirably written by [Saint] De Montfort, and to all who read it grant the Apostolic Benediction.” . . .”There is no surer or easier way than Mary in uniting all men with Christ.”

Pope Benedict XV(1914–22): “A book of high authority and unction.”

Pope Pius XI (1922–39): “I have practiced this devotion ever since my youth.”

Pope Pius XII (1939–58): “God Alone was everything to him. Remain faithful to the precious heritage, which this great saint left you. It is a glorious inheritance, worthy, that you continue to sacrifice your strength and your life, as you have done until today.”

Pope Paul VI (1963–78): “We are convinced without any doubt that devotion to Our Lady is essentially joined with devotion to Christ, that it assures a firmness of conviction to faith in Him and in His Church, a vital adherence to Him and to His Church which, without devotion to Mary, would be impoverished and compromised.”

Saint Pope John Paul II(1978–2005): “The reading of this book was a decisive turning-point in my life. I say ‘turning-point,’ but in fact it was a long inner journey . . . This ‘perfect devotion’ is indispensable to anyone who means to give himself without reserve to Christ and to the work of redemption.” . . .“It is from Montfort that I have taken my motto: ‘Totus tuus’ (‘I am all thine’). ”

Vatican Council II(1962–1965): ‘The maternal duty of Mary toward men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows its power. All her saving influence on men originates not from some inner necessity, but from the divine pleasure. It flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on His mediation, depends entirely on it and draws all its power from it.’ . . . ‘The practices and exercises of devotion to her recommended by the Church in the course of the centuries [are to] be treasured.’ (Lumen Gentium: 60, 67).

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The following apparitions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque is based on the link: https://www.piercedhearts.org/theology_heart/life_saints/margaret_mary.htm

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was born on July 22nd, 1647 in Burgundy France. When she was around fifteen years old, she consecrated her life to the Most Blessed Virgin. On May 25th, 1671, Margaret entered the Visitation Convent at Paray and in November 1672, pronounced her final vows.

One day, in the Monastery, the Lord told her: “Learn that I am a Holy Master and One that teaches holiness, I am pure and cannot endure the slightest stain. Therefore thou must act with simplicity of heart and with an upright and pure intention in My presence…”

First Revelation took place on December 27, 1673, feast of St. John the Apostle:

Jesus told her: “My Divine Heart is so inflamed with love for men, and for thee in particular that, being unable any longer to contain within Itself the flames of its burning charity, It needs to spread them abroad by thy means, and manifest itself to them (mankind) in order to enrich them with the precious treasures which I discover to thee, and which contain graces of sanctification and salvation necessary to withdraw them from the abyss of perdition. I have chosen thee as an abyss of unworthiness and ignorance for the accomplishment of this great design, in order that everything may be done by Me.”

Key point: Jesus’ Heart is Divine.

On one occasion, Jesus said to her: “I search for a victim of My Heart, someone who would want to sacrifice herself as an immolated host for the fulfillment of my designs.”

Second revelation which took place within a month or two after the first apparition. St. Margaret Mary wrote:

“The Divine Heart was presented to me in a throne of flames, more resplendent than a sun, transparent as crystal, with this adorable wound. And it was surrounded with a crown of thorns, signifying the punctures made in it by our sins, and a cross above signifying that from the first instant of His Incarnation, that is, as soon as the Sacred Heart was formed, the cross was implanted into it and from the first moment it was filled with all the sorrow to be inflicted on it by the humiliations, poverty, pain, and scorn of His sacred humanity was to endure throughout His life and during His sacred passion.”

“…He promised to pour out into the hearts of all those who honor the image of His Heart all the gifts it contains in fullness, and for all those who would wear this image on their persons He promised to imprint His love on their hearts and to destroy all unruly inclinations. Everywhere this holy image was exposed to be honored, He would pour fourth His graces and blessings…”

Third apparition which took place in 1675, Jesus said:“Behold this heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to the point of spending itself and being consumed to prove its love to them. And in return, I receive from most men only ingratitude because of their irreverence and sacrileges and the coldness and scorn they have for me in this Sacrament of love. But what offends me most is that hearts consecrated to me act in this way. Do thou at least console me by supplying for their ingratitude, as far as thou art able.”

Sister Margaret Mary was inspired by Jesus Christ to establish the Holy Hour and to pray lying prostate with her face to the ground from eleven till midnight on the eve of the first Friday of each month (Thursday 11:00PM to Friday 12:00AM), to share in mortal sadness Jesus endured when abandoned by His Apostles in His Agony and to beg God for mercy for the world. The next day, Friday, He said, she was to receive Holy Communion in reparation for the sins committed against His Sacred Heart.

In March of 1824, Leo XII pronounced her Venerable, on September 18, 1864, Pius IX declared her Blessed, and in 1920 Benedict XV canonized her.

Pope Pius XI stated: “It is no wonder, therefore, that our predecessors have constantly defended this most approved form of devotion- the pious devotion of the faithful toward the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the custom of receiving Holy Communion on the first Friday of every month at the desire of Christ Jesus, a custom which now prevails everywhere.”

Our Lord made twelve promises to St. Margaret Mary in favor for those devoted to His Sacred Heart:

1.He will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
2.He will establish peace in their homes.
3.He will comfort them in all their afflictions.
4.He will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.
5.He will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
6.Sinners will find in His Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
7.Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.
8.Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
9.He will bless every place in which an image of His Heart is exposed and honored.
10.He will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
11.Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in His Heart.
12.In the excessive mercy of His Heart, His all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in His disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. His Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.

The devotions attached to these promises are:

1. Receiving Communion as often as possible.
2. First Fridays: going to Confession, receiving the Eucharist, and praying for the Pope, on the first Friday of each month for nine consecutive months.
3. If your able to, Holy Hour: Eucharistic Adoration for one hour on Thursdays.
4. Celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart.

5. Having a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus displayed in your home and on your person.

Jesus mentioned to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque that His Heart is Divine. Here are quotes from the “Catechism of the Catholic Church”, by Pope John Paul II, that explains this.

(464) “The unique and altogether singular event of the Incarnation of the Son of God does not mean that Jesus Christ is part God and part man, nor does it imply that he is the result of a confused mixture of the divine and the human. He became truly man while remaining truly God. Jesus Christ is true God and true man.”

(466) “The Nestorian heresy regarded Christ as a human person joined to the divine person of God's Son. Opposing this heresy, St. Cyril of Alexandria and the third ecumenical council, at Ephesus in 431, confessed "that the Word, uniting to himself in his person the flesh animated by a rational soul, became man. Christ's humanity has no other subject than the divine person of the Son of God, who assumed it and made it his own, from his conception. For this reason the Council of Ephesus proclaimed in 431 that Mary truly became the Mother of God by the human conception of the Son of God in her womb: "Mother of God, not that the nature of the Word or his divinity received the beginning of its existence from the holy Virgin, but that, since the holy body, animated by a rational soul, which the Word of God united to himself according to the hypostasis, was born from her, the Word is said to be born according to the flesh."

(468) “After the Council of Chalcedon, some made of Christ's human nature a kind of personal subject. Against them, the fifth ecumenical council, at Constantinople in 553, confessed that "there is but one hypostasis [or person], which is our Lord Jesus Christ, one of the Trinity. "Thus, everything in Christ's human nature is to be attributed to his divine person as its proper subject, not only his miracles but also his sufferings and even his death: "He who was crucified in the flesh, our Lord Jesus Christ, is true God, Lord of glory, and one of the Holy Trinity."

Our catechism is specifically stating that, the Second Person of the most Holy Trinity, who is God, suffered and died on the cross. Since God is Infinitely Powerful and Good in all ways, He could not suffer and die until He assumed human nature.

From St. Catherine of Siena (please go to St. Catherine of Siena page), we learn that each Divine Person is pure Love itself. God the Father is He Who Is, God the Son is the Word of the Father, and God the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Love that unites the Father and the Son.

Since the love between Jesus and Mary is perfect, then Mary suffered the same pain in her Heart as Jesus did. We will show later that St. Louis de Montfort explains that even Jesus willed to offer to the Father all of his sufferings through and with Mary. And it was thus that, by Mary offering her Son freely to the Father, that she became true Co-redemptrix.

Our catechism is also saying that, everything in Christ’s human nature, for example His Sacred Heart, is to be attributed to His Divine Person as its proper subject. Hence, the Divine Heart of Jesus is the very Heart of the Second Person of the most Holy Trinity who is Wholly God. Hence the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the very Heart of God.

(477) “At the same time the Church has always acknowledged that in the body of Jesus "we see our God made visible and so are caught up in love of the God we cannot see." The individual characteristics of Christ's body express the divine person of God's Son. He has made the features of his human body his own, to the point that they can be venerated when portrayed in a holy image, for the believer "who venerates the icon is venerating in it the person of the one depicted".

Hence, our catechism states that, The Second Person of the Holy Trinity has made the features of His human body His own, which again means that the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the very Heart God.

In regard to veneration of icons: (477) “…the believer who venerates the icon is venerating in it the person of the one depicted.”

(2132) “The Christian veneration of images is not contrary to the first commandment which proscribes idols. Indeed, "the honor rendered to an image passes to its prototype," and "whoever venerates an image venerates the person portrayed in it." The honor paid to sacred images is a "respectful veneration," not the adoration due to God alone: Religious worship is not directed to images in themselves, considered as mere things, but under their distinctive aspect as images leading us on to God incarnate. the movement toward the image does not terminate in it as image but tends toward that whose image it is.”

We should also make the sign of the cross or bow before an image of the Mother of God as explained in the “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin” paragraph 116.

116. “True devotion to our Lady has also several exterior practices. Here are the principal ones: … (8) Genuflecting or bowing to her each morning…”

History on the Apparitions of Fatima

The following is a history on the Apparitions of Fatima based on the link: https://archive.fatima.org/essentials/facts/popeapprov.asp

“In 1917, as the First World War was being fought across Europe and showing no signs of concluding peacefully, Pope Benedict XV turned in a petition to the Blessed Virgin Mary, through Whom all graces are dispensed. The Pope urgently asked all of the Christian people to beg the Virgin Mary to obtain the peace of the world, and to solemnly entrust the task to Her alone.

He wished the world to "have recourse to the Heart of Jesus, throne of graces, and to this throne to have recourse through the intermediary of Mary", and he ordered that the invocation ‘Queen of Peace, pray for us’ be permanently added to the Litany of Loreto. Then, confidently placing the peace of the world in Her hands, the Pope made another appeal:

“To Mary, then, who is the Mother of Mercy and omnipotent by grace, let loving and devout appeal go up from every corner of the earth – from noble temples and tiniest chapels, from royal palaces and mansions of the rich as from the poorest hut – from blood-drenched plains and seas. Let it bear to Her the anguished cry of mothers and wives, the wailing of innocent little ones, the sighs of every generous heart: that Her most tender and benign solicitude may be moved and the peace we ask for be obtained for our agitated world. “

The gracious Virgin responded quickly to the urgent pleas of the Pope: only eight days later, on May 13, 1917, She appeared at Fatima and gave to the Pope and humanity a plan for peace. However, this plan first required the obedience of the people and especially of Christ’s Vicar on earth, the Pope. God and the Blessed Virgin agreed to give the world peace, but since it was the Pope who asked to be shown the way to peace, his cooperation in the designs of Heaven became requisite.

Thus, from the beginning the Holy Father has had a specific role in the Message of Fatima: because of his insistence God sent His holy Mother to Fatima; and when the Pope fulfills God’s demands, that the Pope with all the Bishops of the world consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Blessed Virgin will then bring peace to the world. Therefore, because their role in the Fatima Message is so primary, let us examine how the Popes have approved of and promoted Fatima.

Firstly, Pope Benedict XV, in a letter to the Portuguese bishops on April 29, 1918, referred to the occurrences at Fatima as "an extraordinary aid from the Mother of God.”

Then on October 1, 1930 the Sacred Penitentiary under Pius XI granted a partial indulgence to those who individually visited the Shrine and prayed for the intentions of the Holy Father, and a plenary indulgence once a month to those who went there in a group.

With the knowledge and consent of Pope Pius XI, on October 13, 1930 Bishop da Silva of Leiria (the diocese in which Fatima is contained) announced the results of the official inquiry of Fatima in a pastoral letter on the apparitions. This official approval contained these important paragraphs:

In virtue of considerations made known, and others which for reason of brevity we omit; humbly invoking the Divine Spirit and placing ourselves under the protection of the most Holy Virgin, and after hearing the opinions of our Rev. Advisors in this diocese, we hereby:

1. Declare worthy of belief, the visions of the shepherd children in the Cova da Iria, parish of Fatima, in this diocese, from the 13th May to 13th October 1917.

2. Permit officially the cult of Our Lady of Fatima.

In October of 1942, in response to a message given to him by Sister Lucia in 1940, Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In early 1943, Sister Lucia explained that the Lord told her that He would accept this Act of Consecration to help speed the end of World War II, but that it will not obtain worldwide peace. As predicted, this act obtained the end of the war, but did not usher in the reign of peace Our Lady promised, as the world’s bishops did not participate in it.

On May 4, 1944, the Holy See instituted the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In 1964, during the Second Vatican Council, at the solemn closing ceremonies at the end of the third session, before all the Catholic bishops of the world, Pope Paul VI renewed Pius XII’s consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Before his election to the Papacy, Pope John Paul I exhibited a particular devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, and as Cardinal Patriarch of Venice he led a pilgrimage there.

Pope John Paul II had many times exhibited his approval of Fatima. He had visited Fatima three times – in 1982, 1991 and 2000. During his 2000 visit he beatified the two deceased seers, Jacinta and Francisco. He has also made the Feast day of Our Lady of Fatima universal by ordering it to be included in the Roman Missal.

On May 13, 1982, one year after an assassination attempt in St Peter's Square on 13 May 1981 (the anniversary of the first apparition), Pope John Paul II travelled to Fatima, where he met Sr Lucia. He believed he owed his survival to the direct intervention of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. During his homily at Mass Pope John Paul II said, "The appeal of the Lady of the Message of Fatima is so deeply rooted in the Gospel and the whole of Tradition that the Church feels that the Message imposes a commitment on Her." He also said, "The Message is addressed to every human being. … Because of the continuing increase of sin and the dangers, such as nuclear war, now threatening humanity, the Message of Fatima is more urgent and relevant in our time than it was when Our Lady appeared 65 years ago."

Pope John Paul II requested that the statue of Our Lady from Fatima's Capelinha be sent to Rome, and then in collegial union with the Bishops of the Church, he specifically consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on March 25, 1984 (the feast of the Annunciation).

Again, Pope John Paul II later requested that the statue of Our Lady from Fatima's Capelinha be sent to Rome, and then in collegial union with all the Bishops of the Church for the Jubilee, he specifically consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on October 8, 2000.

On October 13, 2019 Pope Francis consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Thus, from the above examples, we can see that in addition to its official approval in 1930, Popes have approved of Fatima in many decisive ways.

Apparitions of Fatima

We will now present the apparitions of Fatima. The following is based on the book, “Our Lady of Fatima: Prophecies of Tragedy or Hope for America and the World” and quoted from the websites:https://www.tfp.org/what-our-lady-said-at-fatima-on-may-13-1917/ http://www.theholyrosary.org/fatimaapparitions

First apparition of the Angel

In spring in 1916 Lucia Dos Santos age 9, and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, ages 8 and 6 respectively, were at a meadow with their sheep in a hamlet of Fatima. It started raining, and they hid in a small cave to escape the rain. After the rain stopped and the sun came out, they stayed in the cave to eat their lunch, say the rosary and play a game of jacks. They had played but for a short while when, on the serene day, a strong wind blew that swayed the trees and a sudden white light enveloped them. In the middle of that light appeared a cloud in the form of a young man who said to them: "Fear not! I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me!" The angel knelt on the ground and bowed very low. The children imitated the angel and repeated his words three times: “My God, I believe in Thee, I adore Thee, I hope in Thee, and I love Thee. I ask pardon for all those who do not believe in Thee, do not adore Thee, do not hope in Thee, and do not love Thee. Amen." Then he rose and said: "Pray this way. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications."

Second apparition of the Angel

It occurred in summer, when the seers were playing near the well of Lucia's house. The Angel said to them: "What are you doing? Pray! Pray a great deal. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs on you. Offer prayers and sacrifices continually to the Most High." The children asked: "How must we sacrifice ourselves?" The angel said: "Make everything you do a sacrifice and offer it as an act of reparation for the sins by which God is offended, and as a petition for the conversion of sinners. By this you will bring peace to your country. I'm its Guardian Angel, the Angel of Portugal. Above all accept and bear with submission all the suffering the Lord will send you." From that moment, they began to offer to the Lord everything that offended Him, without trying to find any other ways of mortification or penance other than passing hour after hour, bowed to the ground, repeating the prayer that the angel had taught them.

Third apparition of the Angel

It occurred in autumn at Cabeco. The children started their prayers when they saw the angel, which had in his hand a chalice over which hung a Host, from which fell in the chalice some drops of Blood. He knelt and repeated three times with the children: " Most Holy Trinity-Father, Son, and Holy Spirt-I adore thee profoundly. I offer thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles in the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which he is offended. And through the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners." Then he rose, took the Host, and gave it to Lucia, while the contents of the chalice he gave to Jacinta and Francisco, and said: " Take the Body and the Blood of Jesus Christ horribly outraged by thankless men. Recover their sins and comfort your God."

First apparition of Our Lady

On Sunday May 13th, 1917 the children were pasturing their flock as usual at the Cova da Iria, which was about a mile from their homes. They were playing when suddenly a bright beam of light pierced the air. They described it as a flash of lightning. Frightened by the flash, the children looked around at the sky that was clear and bright without the least spot of a cloud. The children, however, thought that they had better head home in case it might start raining. As they descended the hill. Another flash of lightning took them by surprise. Panicky with fear, they took a few steps and looked towards the right. There, standing over the foliage of a small holm oak, "a lady dressed all in white, more brilliant then the sun shedding rays of light, clear and stronger than a crystal glass filled with the most sparkling water pierced by the burning rays of the sun”.

The lady spoke to them and said: "Fear not! I will not harm you." "Where are you from?" the children asked. "I am from heaven" the beautiful lady replied, gently raising her hand towards the sky. "What do you want of me?", Lucia asked. "I came to ask you to come here for six consecutive months, on the thirteenth day, at this same hour. I will tell you later who I am and what I want. And I shall return here again a seventh time." Lucia said: "Do you come from heaven...and will I go to heaven?" " Yes, you'll go". "And Jacinta?" "As well" " And Francisco?" "Him too, but he will have to say many rosaries". “Is Maria das Neves already in heaven?” “Yes, she is.” “And Amelia?” “She will be in purgatory until the end of the world. Do you wish to offer yourselves to God, to endure all the suffering that He may please to send you, as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and to ask for the conversion of sinners?" "Yes, we do." said the children. "You will have to suffer much, but the grace of God will be your comfort.

Lucia explains later: “It was upon saying these last words, ‘the grace of God…’ that for the first time she opened her hands, which emitted a most intense light that penetrated our breasts, reaching the innermost part of our souls and making us see ourselves in God, Who was that light, more clearly than we can see ourselves in the best of mirrors. Then, driven by a deep inspiration, we knelt down and repeated inwardly: ‘O Most Holy Trinity, I adore Thee! My God, my God, I love Thee in the Most Blessed Sacrament.”

A moment later, Our Lady added, “Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.” She immediately began to rise serenely toward the east until she disappeared far into the distance. The light that surrounded her was, so to speak, opening her way through the starry firmament.

Second apparition of Our Lady

On June 13, 1917, accompanied by about 50 people, the children were reciting the rosary, when there was again the lightning, and immediately after, the Lady on the holm oak appeared like in May. "What do you want from me?" asked Lucia. "I wish you to come here the 13th of next month; that you say the Rosary every day, and that you learn to read. In succeeding months, I will tell you what else I want." "I would like to ask you to bring us to Heaven", said Lucia. "Yes, I shall take Jacinta and Francisco soon, but you must stay here for a long time. Jesus wishes to use you in order to make me known and loved. God wishes you to remain in the world for some time because He wants to use you to establish in the world a devotion to my Immaculate Heart. I promise salvation to those who embrace it, and these souls will be beloved of God like flowers arranged by me to adorn His throne." Lucia asked: "Will I stay here alone”? "Don't be discouraged, I will not abandon you ever, replied the Lady. My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and through it will conduct you to God." Then She opened her hands and emanated her light on the children, Jacinta and Francisco seemed to be in the light that went up toward the sky, Lucia in the light that spread on the earth. In front of the palm of the right hand of the Lady there was a heart surrounded by thorns that pierced it. They understood that it was the Immaculate Heart of Mary affronted from the sins of men, and She then asked for reparation.

Third apparition of Our Lady

On July 13, 1917 they recited the rosary with the crowd. Mr. Marto, father of Jacinta and Francisco, says that when the third apparition began, a little grayish cloud hovered over the holm oak, the sunlight diminished, and a cool breeze blew over the mountain range, even though it was the height of summer. He also heard something that sounded like flies inside an empty jug. The seers saw the customary glare, and immediately afterward they saw Our Lady over the holm oak.

Lucia asked: "What do you want from me?" She answered: "That you come the 13th of the next month, that you continue to recite the Rosary every day to our Lady of the Rosary to obtain peace in the world and the end of the war, because only She will be able to aid you." Lucia said, " I want to ask you to tell us who you are, and to make a miracle for the crowd to believe that you appear." She Answered: "Continue to come here every month. In October I will tell you who I am, that which I want, and I will perform a miracle that all can see and believe.”

Lucia then made a number of requests for conversions, cures, and other graces. Our Lady recommended the constant recitation of the Rosary; thus, they would obtain those graces during the year. Then she said: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say often this prayer, especially during any sacrifice: "O my Jesus, I offer this for love of Thee, for the conversion of poor sinners, and in reparation for all the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

Lucia explains: “As Our Lady said these last words, she once again opened her hands as she had done in the two previous months. The radiant light which streamed from them seemed to penetrate the earth, and we saw, as it were, a great sea of fire; submerged in that fire were demons and souls in human shapes who resembled red-hot, black and bronze-colored embers that floated about in the blaze, borne by the flames that issued from them with clouds of smoke, falling everywhere like the showering sparks of great blazes – with neither weight nor equilibrium – amidst shrieks and groans of sorrow and despair that horrified us and made us shudder with fear. The devils stood out like frightful and unknown animals with horrible and disgusting shapes, but transparent like black coals that have become red-hot.”

The vision lasted only a moment during which Lucia let out a gasp. She remarks that if it were not for Our Lady’s promise to take them to heaven, the seers would have died of fright and terror.

Frightened they lifted their eyes to the Lady who told them: "You have seen Hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. To save future souls God wishes to establish in the world the devotion to My Immaculate Heart. If people do what I tell you, many souls will be saved." Then She said:" If my requests are granted, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, she will scatter her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecution of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be destroyed...But in the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, Russia will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world". "Do you want to learn a prayer?" Our Lady asked, "Yes we do!" the children responded. "When you recite the Rosary, say at the end of each decade: Oh My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy."

Fourth apparition of Our Lady

In August the children were prevented by the civil authorities to go to the meeting of the 13th in which had gathered an immense crowd. The children for two days were confined and threatened with many torments to make them deny, but they did not surrender, they were ready to offer their lives not to betray the promises made to the Lady. When they were released on August 19, later in the day at about four o’clock in the afternoon, Lucia was with Francisco and another cousin at Valinhos, a property belonging to one of her uncles, when the atmospheric changes that preceded the apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria began to occur: a sudden cooling of the temperature and a waning of the sun. Feeling that something supernatural was approaching and enveloping them, Lucia sent for Jacinta, who arrived in time to see Our Lady appear–heralded as before by a bright light–over a holm oak slightly larger than the one at Cova da Iria. " What do you want from me?" Lucia asked. "I Want you to continue to go to the Cova da Iria on the 13th, that you continue to say the Rosary every day. I, in the last month will make the miracle that all will believe." Then with a sadder appearance told them: "Pray, pray a lot and offer sacrifices for the sinners. You know that many souls go to hell because there is none who pray for them." As usual, she then began to rise toward the east. The seers cut boughs off the tree over which Our Lady had appeared to them and took them home. The boughs gave off a uniquely sweet fragrance.

Fifth apparition of Our Lady

On September 13th, the children and about 20,000 persons accompanied them to the Cova da Iria and they there recited the Rosary. Atmospheric phenomena similar to those of the previous apparitions occurred: the sudden cooling of the air, a dimming of the sun to the point where the stars could be seen, and a rain resembling iridescent petals or snowflakes that disappeared before touching the ground. This time, a luminous globe was noticed which moved slowly and majestically through the sky from east to west and, at the end of the apparition, in the opposite direction. The seers saw a light, and, immediately following this, they saw Our Lady over the holm oak. "I Want you to come here on October 13 and that you continue to recite the Rosary to obtain the end of the war. In October the Lord, the sorrowful Lady, the Lady of Mt. Carmel, and St Joseph with the child Jesus, will also come to bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices, but He does not want you to sleep with the ropes, wear them only during the day." Lucia then said: “They have requested me to ask you for many things, for the cure of some sick persons, of a deaf-mute.” Yes, I will cure some, others not. In October, I will perform a miracle for all to believe. And rising, she disappeared in the same manner as before.

Sixth and last apparition of Our Lady

On October 13,  1917 the children surrounded by a crowd of 70,000 persons under a torrential rain, Lucia asked again of the Lady: "What do you want from me?" she answered: "I am the Lady of the Rosary, I desire here a chapel in my honor to be built, that people continue to recite the Rosary every day. The war is going to end, and the soldiers will soon return to their homes." Then Lucia asked: "May I ask you for cures and conversions, will you grant them?". "Some yes, others no. It is necessary that they ask pardon for their sins, that they don't offend God our Lord, for he is already too much offended." "Do you want anything else from me?" Lucia asked. "I do not want anything more."

Then She opened her hands again and She launched a ray of light in the direction of the sun. At this point the promised sign happened, Lucia shouted to look at the sun, the rain stopped suddenly and there appeared an exceptionally bright sun but not dazzling.

Three scenes followed in succession, symbolizing first the joyful mysteries of the Rosary, then the sorrowful mysteries, and, finally, the glorious mysteries. Lucia alone saw the three scenes; Francisco and Jacinta saw only the first.

First scene: Saint Joseph appeared beside the sun with the Child Jesus and Our Lady of the Rosary. It was the Holy Family. The Virgin was dressed in white with a blue mantle. Saint Joseph was also dressed in white, and the Child Jesus in light red. Saint Joseph blessed the crowd, making the Sign of the Cross three times. The Child Jesus did the same.

Second scene: This was followed by the vision of Our Lady of Sorrows, without the sword in her heart, and of Our Lord overwhelmed with sorrow on the way to Calvary. Our Lord made the Sign of the Cross to bless the people.

Third scene: Finally, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth, appeared in a glorious vision with the Child Jesus in her bosom.

While these scenes took place, the seventy thousand spectators witnessed the miracle of the sun.

It had rained all during the apparition. At the end of the conversation between Our Lady and Lucia — when the Blessed Virgin rose and Lucia shouted, “Look at the sun!” — the clouds opened up, revealing the sun as an immense silver disk. It shone with an intensity never before seen but was not blinding. This lasted only an instant. Then the immense ball began to “dance.” The sun began to spin rapidly like a gigantic circle of fire. Then it stopped momentarily, only to begin spinning swiftly again. Its rim became scarlet; whirling, it scattered red flames across the sky. Their light was reflected on the ground, on the trees, on the bushes, and on the very faces and clothing of the people, which took on brilliant hues and changing colors.

After performing this bizarre pattern three times, the globe of fire seemed to tremble, shake, and then plunge in a zigzag toward the terrified crowd. All this lasted about ten minutes. Finally, the sun zigzagged back to its original place and once again became still and brilliant, shining with its everyday brightness. The cycle of the apparitions had ended. Many people noticed that their clothes, soaking wet from the rain, had suddenly dried. The miracle of the sun was also seen by numerous witnesses up to twenty-five miles away from the place of the apparition.

After the apparitions of Fatima

Francisco and Jacinta became ill. Francisco died on April 4, 1919 and Jacinta died on February 20, 1920. Before she died, little Jacinta revealed little-known but remarkable statements made by Our Lady. Here are just some of them:
More souls go to hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason. Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much. Many marriages are not good; they do not please Our Lord and are not of God. Priests must be pure, very pure. They should not busy themselves with anything except what concerns the Church and souls. The disobedience of priests to their superiors and to the Holy Father is very displeasing to Our Lord. The Blessed Mother can no longer restrain the hand of her Divine Son from striking the world with just punishment for its many crimes. Tell everybody that God gives graces through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Tell them to ask graces from her, and that the Heart of Jesus wishes to be venerated together with the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Pope John Paul II beatified Francisco and Jacinta Marto on May 13th, 2000 in a celebration attended by more than 700,000 people.

Francisco and Jacinta were then solemnly canonized by Pope Francis at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, in Portugal on May 13 2017, the first centennial of the first Apparition of Our Lady of Fátima.

Lucia entered the Convent of the Sisters of St Dorothy to learn to read and write; then she entered in the convent of Coimbra.

On December 10, 1925, the feast day of Our Lady of Loreto, Sister Lucia being a postulant of the Dorothean Convent in Pontevedra, Spain received a vision where she saw the Blessed Virgin Mary and by Her side, elevated on a luminous cloud, was the Child Jesus. Lucia describes the vision referring to herself in the third person, quote:

“The most holy Virgin rested her hand on her shoulder, and as she did so, she showed her a heart encircled by thorns, which she was holding in her other hand. At the same time, the Child Jesus said: Have compassion on the Heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them.”

Then immediately the Virgin Mary told her:

“Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

On May 29, 1930, Our Lord gave this message to Sister Lucia:

“The reason for the five Saturdays of the month is simple, it is because there are five types of offenses and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: 1) Blasphemies against Her Immaculate Conception: 2) blasphemies against Her Perpetual Virginity: 3) blasphemies against her Divine Maternity, in refusing at the same time to recognize Her as the Mother of men: 4) the offenses of those who outrage Her directly in Her holy images: 5) blasphemies of those who publicly seek to sow in the hearts of children indifference or scorn, or even hatred of this Immaculate Mother.”

In summary: On the first Saturday of five consecutive months, the Blessed Virgin Mary invites us to unite ourselves with her in the prayer of the rosary, in the meditation of its mysteries for fifteen minutes, in confession, in taking part in Holy Mass and in a communion of reparation. Today, reparation on the part of her children must increase, because there is an the ever increasing number of offenses committed against her Immaculate Heart, by insults against her Immaculate Conception, against her perpetual virginity, against her divine and universal motherhood and against her images and because, above all, the souls of the little ones are being alienated from her.

As Our Lady said at the apparition of July 13, 1917, "I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia". She did this on June 13, 1929, when She appeared to Lucia in the Chapel of Dorotheas, in the town of Tuy. Lucia said: "I had sought and obtained permission from my superiors and confessor to make a Holy Hour from eleven o'clock until midnight, every Thursday to Friday night. Being alone one night, I knelt near the altar rails in the middle of the chapel and, prostrate, I prayed the prayers of the Angel. Feeling tired, I then stood up and continued to say the prayers with my arms in the form of a cross. The only light was that of the sanctuary lamp.

Suddenly the whole chapel was illumined by a supernatural light, and above the altar appeared a cross of light, reaching to the ceiling. In a brighter light on the upper part of the cross, could be seen the face of a man and his body as far as the waist; upon his breast was a dove of light; nailed to the cross was the body of another man. A little below the waist, I could see a chalice and a large host suspended in the air, on to which drops of blood were falling from the face of Jesus Crucified and from the wound in His side. These drops ran down on to the host and fell into the chalice. Beneath the right arm of the cross was Our Lady and in her hand was her Immaculate Heart. (it was Our Lady of Fatima, with her Immaculate Heart in her left hand, without sword or roses, but with a crown of thorns and flames). Under the left arm of the cross, large letters, -as if of crystal clear water which ran down upon the altar, formed these words: "Grace and Mercy". I understood that it was the Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity which was shown to me, and I received lights about this mystery which I am not permitted to reveal. Our Lady then said to me: "The moment has come in which God asks the Holy Father, in union with all the Bishops of the world, to make the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, promising to save it by this means. There are so many souls whom the justice of God condemns for sins committed against me, that I have come to ask reparation: sacrifice yourself for this intention and pray."

Sr Lucia wrote two books, Memories, and Calls of the Message of Fatima. She died at the Carmelite convent of St. Teresa of Coimbra in central Portugal, on Sunday at the age of 97 on February 13, 2005.

In summary:

Today the Mother of God is asking each of us, as she did the three children of Fatima, “Do you wish to offer yourselves to God to endure all the sufferings that He may be pleased to send you, as both an act of reparation for the sins with which He is offended and an act of supplication for the conversion of sinners?”

God wishes to establish in the world true devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Heart, which is a refuge and the way that will lead you to God. The Virgin Mary promises salvation to those who embrace it; and these souls will be beloved of God like flowers arranged by her to adorn His throne.

Prayers of Fatima:

1) The Virgin Mary said: I am the Lady of the Rosary; I desire that people continue to recite the Rosary every day. When you recite the Rosary, say at the end of each decade: Oh My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy Mercy."

2) Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say often this prayer, especially during any sacrifice: "O my Jesus, I offer this for love of Thee, for the conversion of poor sinners, and in reparation for all the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

3) During adoration and when you receive Holy Communion say: “My God, I believe in Thee, I adore
Thee, I hope in Thee, and I love Thee. I ask pardon for all those who do not believe in Thee, do not adore Thee, do not hope in Thee, and do not love Thee."

4) During adoration and before you receive Holy Communion pray: “Oh Most Holy Trinity-Father, Son, and Holy Spirt-I adore thee profoundly and I offer thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which he is offended. And through the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners."

Don’t offend God our Lord, for he is already too much offended.

The Child Jesus said: “Have compassion on the Heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them.”

We should devoutly carry out the Communion of reparation on the five first Saturdays. To Sister Lucia the Virgin Mary promised special protection at the moment of death and to obtain the graces necessary for salvation for all her children who, harking to her requests, will have devoutly carried out the practice of the five first Saturdays.

There are three Weapons which the Virgin Mary has prepared for her children:

In paragraph (182) St. Louis de Montfort states: “So the faithful servants of the Blessed Virgin may confidently say with St. John Damascene, "If I confide in you, Mother of God, I shall be saved. Under your protection I shall fear nothing. With your help I shall rout all my enemies. For devotion to you is a weapon of salvation which God gives to those he wishes to save."”

Quote from Saint Padre Pio: “Some people are so foolish that they think they can go through life without the help of the Blessed Mother. Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for the Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother.”

In paragraph (50) part (7) St. Louis de Montfort states: “Lastly, Mary must become as terrible as an army in battle array to the devil and his followers, especially in these latter times. For Satan, knowing that he has little time - even less now than ever - to destroy souls, intensifies his efforts and his onslaughts every day. He will not hesitate to stir up savage persecutions and set treacherous snares for Mary's faithful servants and children whom he finds more difficult to overcome than others.

These are the hours of battle, and therefore those weapons which the Virgin Mary has prepared especially for her children must be made use of: The consecration to her Immaculate Heart, the frequent recitation of the Holy Rosary, and the practice of the five first Saturdays of the month in reparation for the offenses committed against her motherly Heart.

The Virgin Mary will crush the head of Satan

Here we will show that the Virgin Mary will be crushing the head of Satan soon.

Genesis 3:15 "I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel."

Apocalypse 20:[1] “And I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, and a great chain in his hand. [2] And he laid hold on the dragon the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. [3] And he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should no more seduce the nations, till the thousand years be finished.”

Hence, we know from Apocalypse 20:1 that Satan, is the devil, the dragon, and the old serpent. We can learn more about the dragon from Pope Leo XIII vision and how it is connected with the events of Fatima.

The vision of Pope Leo XIII is quoted from the website: https://www.michaeljournal.org/articles/roman-catholic-church/item/the-vision-of-pope-leo-xiii

“Exactly 33 years to the day prior to the great Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, that is, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. When the aged Pontiff had finished celebrating Mass in his private Vatican Chapel, attended by a few Cardinals and members of the Vatican staff, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the long form of the prayer to St. Michael, with instructions that it be said after all Low Masses everywhere.

When asked what had happened, he explained that, as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices - two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation:

The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasted to Our Lord: "I can destroy your Church."

The gentle voice of Our Lord: "You can? Then go ahead and do so."

Satan: "To do so, I need more time and more power."

Our Lord: "How much time? How much power?

Satan: "100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service."

Our Lord: "You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will."

In 1886, Pope Leo XIII decreed that this prayer to St. Michael be said at the end of "low" Mass (not "high", or sung Masses) throughout the universal Church, along with the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen); and the practice of the congregation praying these prayers at the end of Mass continued until about 1970, with the introduction of the new rite of the Mass.

However, at the end of his Angelus message given in St. Peter’s Square, Sunday, April 24, 1994, Pope John Paul II urged Catholics to recite this prayer to Saint Michael once again:

"The prayer can fortify us for that spiritual battle about which the Letter to the Ephesians speaks [of]: "Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power."(Ephesians 6:10). And to this same battle that the Book of the Apocalypse refers [to], recalling in front of our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel (cf. Revelations 12:7). Surely, this scene was very present to Pope Leon XIII, when, at the end of the previous century, he introduced to the entire Church a special prayer to St. Michael. Even if today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of the Eucharistic celebration, I invite all to not forget it, but to recite it in order to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and the spirit of this world."

Here is the original form of the prayer to St. Michael and is the most efficacious:

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.  Most glorious Prince of the Heavenly Armies, Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in “our battle against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places’. (Eph. 6:12)  Come to the assistance of men whom God had created to His likeness and whom He has redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. The Holy Church venerates you as her guardian and protector; to you, the Lord has entrusted the souls of the redeemed to be led into heaven. Pray therefore the God of Peace to crush Satan beneath our feet, that he may no longer retain men captive and do injury to the Church. Offer our prayers to the Most High, that without delay they may draw His mercy down upon us; take hold of “the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan,” bind him and cast him into the bottomless pit “that he may no longer seduce the nations”. (Rev. 20:2-3)

What is not certain is, when did Satan decided to begin his 100 years of greater power? If it began immediately after the vision, then the 100 year period would have ended in 1984; however it may have been delayed. It may not be just a coincidence that exactly 33 years to the day after the vision of Pope Leo XIII, on October 13, 1917, that the Mother of God appeared to three children of Fatima and 70,000 others and presented the miracle of the sun.

Another point of fact is that in a message given to Lucia, one of the children of Fatima, the Mother of God asked the Pope and all the Bishops of the world to consecrate Russia to Her Immaculate Heart, otherwise Russia would spread her errors of Marxist communism throughout the world. Only one month after the miracle of the sun, Marxists communism began in Russia and the color red represents communism. In chapter 12 of the Apocalypse it speaks of a “woman clothed with the sun” and a “great red dragon”.

Apocalypse 12:[1] “And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars: [2] And being with child, she cried travailing in birth, and was in pain to be delivered. [3] And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns: and on his head seven diadems: [4] And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered; that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her son. [5] And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with an iron rod: and her son was taken up to God, and to his throne.”

We know that the “Woman Clothed with the Sun” is the Virgin Mary and her adversary is Satan the dragon. Hence, the miracle of the sun at Fatima must be associated with the “woman clothed with the sun”, and the huge Red Dragon must be Marxist atheism, that is to say, atheistic communism which has spread everywhere the error of the denial and of the obstinate rejection of God.

This indicates that Satan’s reign of greater power started in 1917 and ended in 2017. This also indicates that the Mother of God is about to crush the head of Satan.

On March 19, 1937, Pope Pius XI wrote an encyclical letter titled “Divini Redemptoris” condemning atheistic communism. In 1949 Pope Pius XII approved the document titled “Decree Against Communism” which declared Catholics that professed Communist doctrine to be excommunicated as apostates from the Christian faith.
